Gerald Dickens To Perform At Festival
Acclaimed international actor and Charles Dickens’ Great-Great Grandson himself Gerald Dickens will be performing an exclusive two act set on Wednesday 5th June at Westbourne Hall.
In the first half Gerald will be performing a popular show, based on the life and character of Charles Dickens, ‘Mr Dickens Is Coming’. A light-hearted performance the performance uses scenes from from the great author’s works, diary extracts and observations from those who knew and worked with him.
Then , in the second half things will turn a little darker as Gerald performs extracts from the infamous Sikes and Nancy murder scenes.
Almost 150 years to the day since Dicken’s first performed the piece in Liverpool at the then Theatre Royal, this is Victorian theatre at its most dramatic. Most of Charles’ readings were safe, well-known and often comic passages from his novels, but in 1869 he introduced Sikes and Nancy to his repertoire. When Dickens performed what he called ‘The Murder’ he judged the success of the evening by the number of ladies who had fainted with horror. Today it has lost none of its power.
